Peace: it is a small five letter word but the significance it holds is far more significant. Since the time mankind existed, it has always been in a continuous pursuit of finding peace both outside and inside but it seems like “peace” is always far from the grasp of mankind. If we take history into account we will find that millions of people lost their lives fighting over issues of honor, religion, territory and wealth. It’s being said that with time species evolve but it doesn’t seem to be the case in human beings we are now living in 21st century an era of new technologies but still we are fighting over the same petty issues only difference nowadays is the weapons are more advanced.
If you take into account the recent attack on Charlie Hedbo in France, the civil war in Syria & Iraq by Daesh (also known as ISIS), the mass killing and abduction of children in Nigeria, the killing of innocent school children and staff in Peshawar, Pakistan etc. are all religiously motivated. These mindfreaks who kill innocent lives all around the world, if they want people to believe in their religion, is killing them going to make them believe? What have we learned from Dark Ages is that extremism does not work, only if the modern extremists read the history books.
(Note: The cause of war in Syria may have started for a different reason, but it quickly took the religious turn)
Take a look at the numerous civil war fought throughout Africa in last few decades. Mostly, the third world countries are ones which are bickering over one other for control of the country, but not only them the developed countries are equally engaged in disrupting the world peace for their own resources need and the strategic need for a friendly government.
The ever increasing greed for money and power of Western powers is well known. If you recall correctly to get territorial supremacy over USSR, the western allied forces led, trained and funded Al-Qaeda which is the leading terrorist organization today and disrupting the peace all over the world especially in the middle-east and west. Since the 21st century, Western powers including United States has meddled with the internal affairs of many countries in South & Central America, Balkan Countries, Africa, Middle East, South Asia & Korean Peninsula. One way or other the motivation for this meddling business has been oil or offensive strategic friendly government.
NATO forces have meddled with internal affairs of many countries in the name of foreign aid and to enforce peace, but their plans and strategies to carry out the operation of stabilizing the country have failed time and again (recently Iraq). The installation of new government in Afghanistan is also criticized but is still somehow stable and we wish for it to be stable and stands the test of time. Invading a country is huge expense, which ultimately hit the western powers in 2008 (One of the reasons for 2008 Depression) and then leaders sought new ways to meddle with other countries.
And then the feud over small territories whether it be Russia and Ukraine fighting over Crimea & Eastern Ukraine(being more strategic than territorial) or India and Pakistan which are fighting for control over Kashmir since their independence(psychological move by Pakistan but India gains more as it unites the country as one nation, one more example why guns don’t work in achieving something), the recent dispute between Japan and China over two tiny islands.
Israel and Palestine(& Hezbollah) shed each other’s blood almost every other day and there seems to be no solution to these disputes in near future. United Nations which is supposed to be taking initiatives to bring world peace is as helpless a hippo in quicksand. There are so many other unresolved issues, that it seems impossible to achieve the goal of world peace.
So should we give up on our dream of World Peace?
It doesn’t take a genius to find out that is not a option. We have to believe in it and will have to try even harder and take some concrete actions to achieve this goal. One of the biggest problem is we have a very short memory, take recent example it didn’t took us more than a couple of week to forget the Islamabad school massacre, I mean it was all over the news for about couple of weeks and now it’s totally off grid and nobody cares what’s happening over there and world has moved on to a new controversy that is the Charlie Hedbo killings which shook France and the Western world but as always we will protest for few days government will make big promises and soon all will be forgotten and we will go on with our life waiting for the next tragedy to happen.(Boko Haram massacres entire village)
We will have to be persistent and united in this quest for peace. It’s been said some good comes out of bad so whenever these attacks happen whole world is united let’s take that unity further and fight together till we wipe the source of this attacks forever. We will have to make our hands dirty for the greater good. We need to develop a new approach either we can build anti terrorism body or a peace army which will have all member of UN contributing their resources. Also taking into account that we have to stay united and fight against big superpowers who try to strong arm small nations in order to fulfill their political and monetary need and if we are able to take this measures who knows we might achieve what we are longing for such a long time. The path to world peace seems difficult but it’s not impossible with correct leadership and constant effort it can be achieved it is not a one day task it is a process and if we execute the process correctly world peace could be a reality. Or am I being just more positive & overestimating the mankind ?
