The smartphone giants, Apple and Samsung, have now matured enough to settle the patent dispute outside the courtroom. The expensive courtroom battles are hurting both the companies dearly. As publicity, they are gaining a recognization as major companies but a loss in courtroom can hurt the business of the losing party much more.
According to Kim Yoo-chul, the senior Samsung watcher of Korea Times, both companies are close to settlement of their patent dispute outside courtrooms. The future patent disputes are being settled out of the courts.
“Samsung has recently resumed working-level discussions with Apple and the key issue is how to dismiss all lawsuits,” one source said, declining to be named.
Apple and Google have already agreed to drop patent suits outside the courtrooms. The patents that acquired by Google thru acquisition of Motorola. The dropping of patent suits would be one of the most expensive patent wars to be stopped.
“Things should come to an end during the summer,” FOSS Patents Florian Mueller told Kim. “Apple doesn’t have an endgame strategy. Its agreement with Google shows that its management is looking for a face-saving exit strategy from Steve Jobs’ thermonuclear ambitions that were based on a totally unrealistic assessment of the strength of Apple’s patent portfolio.”
