Outernet, internet for world from space. This ambitious project aims to terminate the censorship and bring the world’s most powerful tool to the masses. According to Internetworldstats.com as of March 2013, only nearly 40% of world population was able to access internet (obviously there would be more people accessing the internet now, as the smartphone usage has grown exponentially).
This project aims to launch many(hundreds) of miniature satellites ( cube-like ) into low Earth orbit by June 2015. Datacasting technology will be used to beam the WiFi radio beams down on earth.
By leveraging datacasting technology over a low-cost satellite constellation, Outernet is able to bypass censorship, ensure privacy, and offer a universally-accessible information service at no cost to global citizens. It’s the modern version of shortwave radio, or BitTorrent from space.
Citizens of countries like China and North Korea that have censored online activity could be given free and unrestricted cyberspace. If everything goes to plan, the Outernet project aims to ask NASA for permission to test the technology on the International Space Station.
