3D Printing revolution has begun, still in the infacy stage but showing sign of great growth. Nokia releases a 3D printing kit that will allow those with a 3D printer to create their own case for the Lumia 820.
The Lumia 820 has removable shell cases that lets users switch up the color of their phone. Also the phone has wireless charging. With removable shell cases and 3D printing kit, users can make their own cases.
“Nokia’s 3D printing community project is a simple concept with exciting potential. We are going to release 3D templates, case specs, recommended materials and best practices – eveything tthat someone versed in 3D printing needs to print their own custom Lumia 820 case. We refer to these files and documents collectively as a 3D printing Development Kit, or 3DK for short. First major phone company to begin embracing the 3D printing community. ” John Kneeland, a Nokia community and developer marketing manager, said in a blog post .
He also added ” 3D printing is spiritual successor to the great granddaddy of customizable phones, the Nokia 5110 and its rainbow collection of removable faceplates. In the future , I envision wildly more modular and customizable phones. Perhaps in addtion to our own beautifully designed phones, we could sell some kind of phone tempalate, and entrepreneurs all over the world can build a local business on building phones precisely tailored to the needs of the user’s community. You want a waterproof, glow in dark phone or with a bootle opener and a solarcharger ? Someone with 3D printer can build it / print it for you.”
Traditionally, mobile entrepreneurs had to focus on the software due to manufacturing constraits, but 3D printing can open up new possibilities, Kneeland said. MakerBot has unveiled its next gen 3D printer, which will set you back $2,199.
