Apple has been silent on the next version of its popular phone, which many continue to call the iPhone 5, but the rumors have been loud. The phone is rumored to have a larger, 4-inch display, faster processor, a new dock connector, and a new design. The phone is likely to be released a week and a half after the event, on Sept. 21.
About a year ago, Tim Cook introduced the iPhone 4S and iOS 5.0. The new iPhone will run iOS 6, which Apple demonstrated at its WWDC conference in June. The new operating system has Facebook integration; a whole new maps app built by Apple; and a Passbook app, which consolidates all your passes, tickets, and coupons into one app portal.
users should expect a new, smaller dock connector and a two-tone, (still) square-ish body.
According to sources and other industry reports, Apple is planning to hold a separate event in October to introduce a smaller iPad or iPad Mini. Amazon is expected to introduce a new 7-inch Kindle Fire next week at an event in Los Angeles.
Apple will hold the event at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. The Cupertino, California, company used the same venue in March to announce its latest iPad tablet computer.
It’s expected that the sixth-generation iPhone will be available for pre-order almost immediately after the event, with the device to hit store shelves by the end of the month.
