2012 London Olympics (Summer Olympics 2012) – A brilliant presentation of beauty and the art.
It all started for London from the bidding process. The won the bid to organize the summer Olympics by competing from Havana, Istanbul, Leipzig, Madrid, Moscow, New York City, Paris and Rio de Janeiro. London got the chance to show the world how to organize biggest sporting event of the world successfully. It was the 3rd time when LONDON hosted the OLYMPICS.
Olympics 2012 started on Friday 27th July 2012 and ended up on 12th August 2012, Sunday. The Opening ceremony took place at 9 pm (Friday). The Opening Ceremony reflected the key themes and priorities of the London 2012 Games, based on sport, inspiration, youth and urban transformation. Throughout these 17 days of enthusiasm among the participating athletes and their coaching staffs throughout the world. Over 10,000 sportspersons from about 200 countries participated for a common goal – GOLD MEDAL.
Many new records were made, new faces shined, made their countries proud. There were 36 sporting events for which these master players competed.
Let’s have a look at the final Medal tally.
USA topped the table with a total of 104 medals including 46 gold, 29 silver and 29 bronze medals.
Just next to USA, it was CHINA again who had a lead in medals tally at the start of Olympics but by the end they lost their lead and had a total of 88 medals including 38, 27, 23, gold, silver and bronze medals respectively. The hosting country Great Britain made it comfortably in top 3 with 29 gold, 17 silver and 19 bronze medals total 65 medals.
INDIA’S BESTEST PERFORMANCE IN OLYMPICS TILL DATE:
India sent a squad of 83 sportsmen with their coaching staff for participating in 13 gaming events. In the medals tally, India topped table of countries without a gold medal by winning 6 medals in total with 2 silver and 4 bronze. The overall position of India was 55 in the medals tally.
For India the account of medals was opened on the 2nd day of Olympics by Shooter GAGAN NARANG. He won the bronze in the 10m air rifle event. A medal was expected from this former world record holder and world champion and he delivered.
Second medal was brought by shooter VIJAY KUMAR (Silver Medal in 25m rapid fire pistol). Following to that India’s SUPER SHUTTLER ‘Saina Nehwal’ brought India another medal, a bronze one. After that unexpected performance from Indians continued and MARY KOM (BOXING), YOGESHWAR DUTT and SUSHIL KUMAR (WRESTLING) brought India medals. It was the best performance from Indians till date in Olympics. But Unfortunately India’s poor performance in field hockey continued and the remained at the last position.
RECORDS, RECORDS and more RECORDS!
From the day 1 of Olympics 2012, It was raining records. Total 25 new world records were stetted up.
Archery, Track and Field, Cycling, Shooting, Swimming, Weightlifting all these sports were shined with new world records tags.
Michael Phelps (USA):
The world-class swimmer finished his Olympic career with 18 gold medals and a total of 22 overall.
In Olympics 2012 Phelps won four golds and two silver medals, making him the most successful athlete of the Games for the third Olympics in a row. After the closing ceremony of Olympics 2012, he retired from the swimming with a registered name in the history.
Usain St. Leo Bolt (JAMAICA):
Jamaican sprinter USAIN BOLT, the fastest man on earth won 3 gold medals this Olympics with new world records.
Andrew “Andy” Murray (GREAT BRITAIN):
Murray beat Federer in the final of the London 2012 Olympics (Men’s single lawn tennis event) to win the gold medal, denying Federer a Career Golden Slam.
SERENA WILLIAMS (USA):
Serena Williams won the women’s single title in lawn tennis by defeating Russian star MARIA SHARAPOVA. Maria was considered as the number one contender for the gold medal but unfortunately she lost the match by straight set losses.
China was at the 2nd place in the medals tally and now with these stats we can assume the Chinese dominance in the Olympics. Mainly, they won the medals in BADMINTON, TABLE TENNIS, SWIMMING, and ARCHERY.
The closing ceremony of Olympics 2012 started at 9pm on 12th 2012. More than 4100 performers performed including adults and school children. All of them celebrated the amazing sporting feats of the athletes who have taken part in the Games with the ultimate zeal. At the end of the Ceremony, the Olympic Games were handed over to Rio de Janeiro for the 2016 Olympic Games, and the Olympic Flame was extinguished, signalling the end of the London 2012 Olympic Games.
