Gangs Of Wasseypur 2: Review (3.5 OzyFlms)

Rating: 3.5 OzyFlms(Ozy Flames)

Gangs of Wasseypur II plunges straight into action, rendering the first part nearly redundant.

The film recapitulates about five minutes of the end of the first part where Sardar Khan (Manoj Bajpayee) was assassinated, and ever since, doesn’t let viewers – even for a moment – divert their attention elsewhere.

A man dies, and revenge is sought. That is strictly all we need to know, the rest falling into place as it goes along.

The story progresses unhindered and characters can’t forget carnal pleasures even in the midst of trauma. Grief is short-lived and Sardar Khan’s family bounces back to extract vengeance from Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia). People are killed left, right and centre and respect is established at gunpoint. Through dark mazes of warring clans to lighter moments of Faizal Khan (Nawazuddin)-Mohsina (Huma Qureshi) courtship, the film saunters into a balanced pace.

Wasseypur is not your average small town; it is one where vengeance is respected above all. A mother doesn’t hesitate to threaten her son with chopping off his fingers when he doesn’t take up a gun to avenge the death of his family members, thereby pushing him into the bottomless abyss of gunfights and bloodbaths. Another mother raises a son who is Shrewdness Incarnate. Friends, brothers, family members – all are sucked into the saga of violence.

Mood wise GOW2 is more gripping than the first film. Unlike GOW2 there is no need to waste minutes in introducing the premise, since you already know it.A familiar idiom kicks in straightaway as Anurag mixes the drama with primal rage, the cocky bursts of humour and cuss spurts very much in place. The blood fest is on too,to retain the menacing edge.

‘Tiger’ scare for ‘Wasseypur’:

“Though the film is picking up at the box office unfortunately it won’t last there for long. With the release of Ek Tha Tiger next week all movies are expected to be washed off the box office. Gangs of Wasseypur 2 would have definitely earned more had it chosen another release date. The film’s lifetime collections will not be more than 18-19 Crores,” reports the trade website.

Agrees trade expert Taran Adarsh: “With #EkThaTiger arriving on Wed, the screen space of #GOW2 will be reduced considerably. So it has to accumulate before Wednesday.”

Thus 3.5 OzyFlms For Wasseypur II.
